Ancient Dice Game Piece – Six Sided Die

Board games and dice games are not modern inventions. Rather, they date back thousands of years. The six-sided die was invented as early as the third millennium BC, and has remained relatively unchanged ever since. In addition to their use in games, an ancient die also had another function in the ancient world. Archaeologists have found dice in ancient temples and other religious settings, suggesting that they functioned in a religious practice known as casting lots. Casting lots was a way of inquiring of God and receiving an answer from Him. This was a common practice in both Old Testament and New Testament times.

“We cast lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for bringing the wood offering into the house of our God, according to our fathers’ houses, at the appointed times year by year, to burn on the altar of the Lord our God as it is written in the Law.” – Nehemiah 10:34

This ancient die is made of limestone. It has six sides, and it features drilled indentations on each side, representing numbers on the die just like those on modern dice.
