Description
Ancient Six Sided Die for Casting Lots
In ancient times, dice often functioned in casting lots. Using a lot-casting die was a way of inquiring of God. Many cultures and religions in the ancient world practiced casting lots, both in Old Testament and New Testament times. They would ask God a question, and roll the dice to determine the answer. The six-sided die appears in the archaeological record as early as the third millennium BC. It has remained relatively unchanged ever since. In addition to being used to cast lots, dice also functioned in board games and dice games, much as they do today.
“Then Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the Lord, and there Joshua divided the land to the children of Israel according to their divisions.” – Joshua 18:10
This ancient lot-casting die is made of limestone. It has six sides, and it features drilled indentations on each side, representing numbers on the die just like those on modern dice.
