Ancient Six-Sided Die from Dice Game

The six-sided die was invented as early as the third millennium BC, and has remained relatively unchanged ever since. The earliest known example of a die arranged so that each set of opposite sides add up to seven, dates to the eighth century BC. Dice had two main functions in the ancient world. Archaeologists often find dice alongside ancient game boards, suggesting that they were part of ancient games. Dice also come to light in ancient temples and other religious settings, suggesting that they functioned in a religious practice known as casting lots. Casting lots was a way of inquiring of God and receiving an answer from Him. When Jesus was crucified, the soldiers cast lots to decide who would get His garment.

“Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: ‘They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.'” – Matthew 27:35

This ancient six-sided die is made of clay. It features indentations on each side, representing numbers on the die just like those on modern dice.
