Description

Early Roman Herodian Style Oil Juglet

Jesus was born into the Herodian era in Judea. When the Romans took control of the Holy Land, they installed Herod the Great as a client king. He took orders from Rome, but his Jewish ancestry made him a suitable ruler for the Jewish people. Herod was famous for both his massive building projects and for his cruelty, such as his massacre of baby boys in Bethlehem as recorded in Matthew 2:16. When Herod died, Rome divided his kingdom between three of his sons, so the Herodian era continued for a second generation.

Pottery from the Herodian period, such as this Herodian style oil juglet, is distinctive. This is the style of pottery that Jesus grew up using. Likely His mother, Mary, used this type of dishes in her kitchen. Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan, who carried oil with him on a journey, possibly in a juglet like this one.

“But a certain Samaritan…went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn and took care of him.” – Luke 10:33–34
