Description

Coin of Herod Agrippa – Bronze Prutah

This coin is a prutah of Herod Agrippa. Herod Agrippa ruled in Judea between A.D. 37–44. He was the grandson of Herod the Great. As such, he was a Jewish king, yet under the authority of Rome. Herod Agrippa was familiar with Christianity from early in his reign. He had the Apostle James put to death, and he imprisoned the Apostle Peter (Acts 12:1–4). Yet later, when he listened to the speech of the Apostle Paul, he was almost persuaded to become a Christian himself.

“Then Agrippa said to Paul, ‘You are permitted to speak for yourself.’ So Paul stretched out his hand and answered for himself …  ‘King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you do believe.’ Then Agrippa said to Paul, ‘You almost persuade me to become a Christian.'” – Acts 26:1, 27–28

This Bronze Prutah of Herod Agrippa likely dates to the 6th year of his reign. It features an umbrella or canopy on the obverse and three heads of barley on the reverse. These designs were in keeping with the Jewish law, which did not permit images of humans on coins.
