Description

Clay Oil Lamp from the Time of Jesus

This tall clay oil lamp dates to the end of the first century BC or the beginning of the first century AD. It was likely in use about the time that Jesus was born.

The world into which Jesus was born was one ruled by Rome. As the Roman Empire expanded, the conquering Romans spread Greek culture. Yet, not everybody accepted this pagan culture. The small province of Judea was home to the Jewish people. They worshipped only one God rather than the pantheon of Greek gods worshiped by the Romans. They lived simple lives, clinging to their own monotheistic culture in the face of world-wide change. Jesus, born into this tumultuous  time and region, brought light into a dark world.

“I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.” – John 12:46

Details:

This tall clay oil lamp has an uncommon design. The body of the lamp is round, and it features an elongated spout. The nozzle is blackened, clearly showing that the lamp was used in antiquity. The lamp features a small loop handle on the back. The unusual feature of the lamp is a bowl-like addition on the top of the lamp. Perhaps it served as a funnel to help with pouring oil into the lamp. Or, perhaps it functioned as an added reservoir, allowing the lamp to hold more oil and thus burn longer.
