Ancient Stone Mace Head – Unfinished

In the ancient world, the mace served as both a weapon and a symbol of royalty. As a weapon, it was eminently practical. A heavy stone mace head on the end of the stick was dangerous in the hands of a skilled warrior. But the mace also had a place among royalty. Many ancient depictions of kings show them wielding a mace, a symbol of the king crushing his enemies. And, some maces were specially designed to serve not as weapons, but as royal scepters.

“So it was, when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, that she found favor in his sight, and the king held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. Then Esther went near and touched the top of the scepter.” – Esther 5:2

This black stone mace head is slightly oblong in shape. A craftsman carefully shaped it and began drilling a central hole by which to attach it to a handle. Yet, for unknown reasons, this mace head is unfinished – the hole does not go all the way through.
