Description

Glass Perfume Flask from the Early Roman Period

During the Early Roman period, perfume, made from aromatic spices, was highly valued. Glass perfume bottles from this period have come to light in a variety of archaeological contexts, primarily from houses and tombs. Those found in homes likely belonged to women who used them either for perfuming their homes or themselves. The glass perfume bottles found in tombs were part of the burial process, perhaps to mask the scent of death or to honor the dead.

After Jesus’ burial, women came to his tomb bringing spices. These were likely in the form of perfume in bottles such as this small Roman glass perfume bottle.

“Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.” – Luke 24:1–2

This Roman glass perfume bottle is of bluish glass with an iridescent patina. Patina is the oxidized coating that builds up on ancient glass over the centuries. The bottle features a small, rounded body, and a relatively wide neck. The rim flares, allowing someone to funnel contents into the bottle. The base is slightly flattened for stability.
