The Widow’s Mite Coin: is a bronze lepton currency discovered in Israel and used in the New Testament times. It was the lowest and smallest bronze currency in Jesus time,

It was in circulation during the time of Jesus over 2,000 years ago in Jerusalem. Although it was the smallest and least valuable of coin in use during Jesus time, it is of great significance to us today. Why?

This coin is an enduring testament to the value of faith. Twice the bible tells us of a poor, destitute widow that approached the temple of God with only a few mites to her name, that she gave away freely and selflessly as an offering to God. Jesus noticed her and explained to his disciples that her gift, as small as it was, was worth far more than the contributions of the wealthy, because she had given ALL that she had:

And Jesus sat over against the treasury and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury, and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, “Verily I say to you, that this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury; For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.” – Mark 12:41

And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. He saw also a certain poor widow casting her two mites and he said, “Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: for all these have their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.” – Luke 21:1

The poor widow offering, by giving away her last two coins, demonstrated her unshakeable faith in God. The Widow’s Mite reminds us to increase our faith and trust in God, especially during the hardest of times.
