Description

Iron Age Warfare Weapon – Ancient Sling Stone

The ancient sling was a valuable long-range weapon. It consisted of a long strap of either leather or woven fiber with a pouch in the center. The slinger would place a slingstone, such as this one, in the pouch, hold both ends together, and swing the sling in a circular motion. He would then release one end of the sling, allowing the slingstone to fly free. Slingers trained to such precision that they could hit the smallest of targets.

David was well trained in the use of a sling after spending time practicing while watching his father’s flocks. He was wise to choose a long-range weapon against his giant foe. Perhaps the lesson of the story of David and Goliath was not so much one of a miraculous triumph of weakness over strength, but an example of using God-given talents in the face of danger rather than responding in fear.

“Then David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.’ … Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead.” – 1 Samuel 17:45, 49
