Description

Glass Bottle for Medicine from the Roman Period

Roman glass bottles, such as this glass medicine bottle, came in a variety of shapes and sizes. The invention of glassblowing in the first century AD allowed for much more variety in glass vessels than had previously been possible. The shape and the small size of this bottle indicates that it likely held a precious liquid, such as medicine. Archaeological excavations have uncovered doctor’s kits from this period. They include small glass jars such as this one, along with medical implements.

“Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.'” – Luke 5:31

Details:

This glass medicine bottle is of greenish glass with patina. The body is slightly elongated. The base of the neck is the smallest part of the jar; the neck widens at the top. The shape of the neck and rim would have allowed for a cloth cover to be securely tied over the top of the bottle. The bottle has a unique decoration. The glassmaker pressed vertical bands into the side of the vessel while the glass was still soft, and then manipulated them to form wavy lines. The base of the bottle features a pontil scar, the point where the glassmaker separated the vessel from his glassblowing tools. This is a clear indication of the glassmaking technique used.
